20 Methods Fighting Form was created by the late Grandmaster, Wang Zi Ping. This routine, also called Er Shr Fa Chuan, is complete in teaching hand and foot, throwing, and chin na techniques. It’s movements are based in the Cha Family system.
20 Methods is taught in single movements, single two man applications for each technique, a single man form linking the 20 techniques together, and finally a two man form, linking the 20 individual applications together.
This form is still being passed on by Grandmaster Wang Jurong, the only child of Wang Zi Ping, and her daughters, Grace Wu-Monat and Helen Wu.

The title of this suit of boxing technique was selected and compiled in accordance with a series traditional boxing techniques, such as Cha, Hua, Hong, Pao, Tan and Baji, etc. Although there are many types of martial art in China, but the basic principle are similar. Once you can grasp the basic techniques very well, you can grasp all kinds of skills easily. So these twenty techniques are the basic skills. There are eight elementary parts in human’s body can be used to attack opponents, they are palm, fist, elbow, shoulder, waist, hip, knee, foot. All the skills which will use these eight parts are collected into the twenty techniques. Abstract names of these techniques will not be used anymore and they will be replaced with some names which can be understood and remembered easily. We call fist as hit, call foot as kick. Some complex technique will be described with vivid names.
The main purpose of this book is to make these twenty techniques can be practiced separately, means movement by movement (in short, it will be called separately in the following texts) or practiced consistently, means connect all the movements to a complete series. (In short, it will be called consistently in the following texts). The twenty techniques can also be practiced alone or in pairs; they are not only the comprehensive physical exercise, but also are basic boxing training. You need to familize with each movement when you practice separately and apply the basic movement and main points. Practicing consistently will increase the interest of the players and the posture is more beautiful. If you want to obtain a good result, you have to practice step by step. If you want to obtain a further achievement, you need to grasp each technique very well. Each one of these twenty techniques will be practiced alternately, so that the player can develop in balance, not lay particular stress on left hand and foot or right hand and foot. You can decide the forward steps in accordance with the size of the yard. If the yard is not large enough, you can turn around and continue the forward steps.
The twenty techniques can be taught one to one or one to many. The titles of main movements of each technique need to be listed, so that they can be remembered easily by teachers and students. Each movement can be divided into level 1, 2 or level 1,2,3 in accordance with the difficulty. The twenty techniques can be separated to four units: Unit one is about practicing separately and alone; unit two is about practicing consistently and alone; unit three is about practicing separately and in pairs; unit four is about practicing consistently and in pairs. Now I change it to two units to make it easier to be used in the teaching process: Unit one is about practicing alone (include separately and consistently); Unit two is about practicing in pairs (include separately and consistently). In unit one, the consistent movement practice pay more attention to explain how to connect the movements. The same movement with the separately practice will be simply indicated with names only. Readers can make movement of the separately as the reference. It is similar in unit two.
A lot of movements in these twenty techniques are unique skills and there is no crack method at all. However, to make the practice in pairs successfully, I attach some crack methods; please apply them flexibly in the real practice condition.
Practice alone pays more attention to physical exercise. Each movement among the twenty techniques is a process of studying and works as the base of pairs practice. For example, for a wrestler, it is impossible to grasp the skill of “kick flying foot” without the practice of “kick the poles,” and at the same time, “kick flying foot” should be able to be used separately by each foot, otherwise you will loss good opportunity in the real match. So if you want to grasp the twenty techniques very well, you have to pay more attention to the practice of separate movement first.
You need to pay attention to six kinds of cooperation while practice each movement. Six cooperation can be divided into three outside cooperation and three inside cooperation. The outside cooperation includes cooperation between hand and foot, elbow and knee, shoulder and hip; the inside cooperation includes cooperation between brain and mind, mind and qi(air), Qi and power. You need to pay attention to the matching of these six cooperation when you practice any technique. After you are skillful, your physical condition will be strengthened.
You should practice step by step, study consistent movements after you grasp the separate movements, and need to grasp the changes and pay attention to the requirement of six cooperation. It will benefit to the development of all kinds of functions in your body and will establish a good foundation for your martial art practice. With the help of this foundation, you can make further progress in your body building and martial art skills.
The twenty techniques are suitable for all kinds of martial art lovers, no matter what ages and genders they are. Learners can make a personal plan in accordance with their detail age and physical condition. For the old, they can keep the posture a little bit higher, practice the technique gently and slowly. For the young, they can keep the posture a little bit lower, practice the technique violently and quickly. There are five forward practices and five backward practices, so, to practice the twenty techniques, you just need a very limited space. Usually, an ordinary playground can satisfy forty to fifty people to practice at the same time.
Each movement of separate practice in unit one is summarized for a short sentence with eight Chinese characters. They are the title of each movement as well. I will never make a detail explanation when we meet the same movements in the following units. Just mark it with those eight words. However, for those situations that some movements are same but the connection movements are different, I will attach an extra explanation.
All the starting and ending posture of separate movement are to standby and hold both elbows. When you end the posture, both hands should come back close to the waist and hold both elbows, close both legs together.
The dotted line in the illustration is used to show the process to next movement; it is a supplement of the texts. All the illustrations are drawn from frontage. Some movements which can hardly be seen clearly will be shown with back and side illustrations for learners.”
