Let's give it try to see how it works Carla....

Kwan Do, Gung Li, Lien Bu, Tai Chi Double Edge, Dragon Phoenix, Staff, Palm Changes, and Tai Chi 2 Man Broadsword

Dominick Ruggieri

Today we had a good day doing Kwan Do, Dragon Phoenix, Shaolin Double Edge, Tai Chi Broadsword, and Tai Chi Spear.

The we reviewed Pa Kua Palm Changes and the Continuous Form.

We finished class with reviewing our game plan to teach Tai Chi Spear in the Group Weapons class.

Great Job today!

Carla Navallo

Excited to have completed the Hsing Yi written exams and starting the Pa Kua examinations.

Carla Navallo

Surprised to have gotten 100 on the first exam. Great conversation with Shifu about how wiki and how 1 becomes 2 (tai chi), which then becomes 8 (Pa Kua). Also learned that Pa Kia is based on the Tao. Shifu went over the creation and destruction cycles. The creation cycle is a circle. Metal creates water, Water creates wood. Wood creates fire. Fire creates earth. Earth creates metal. The destruction cycle is a star within the circle. Metal destroys wood. Wood destroys earth. Earth destroys water. Water destroys fire. Fire destroys metal. Also discussion about the I Ching. He thought perhaps he would ask one of his teachers (I think Mark) if he would come to one of our Chi Gung classes and talk to us about it. Hope so. Would be very interesting and informative.

Carla Navallo

Struggling with tai chi broadsword. And it's a form I learned a long time ago. Certainly need to practice that one.

Carla Navallo

Delighted to have completed the Hsing Yi and Pa Gua exams and especially pleased that I passed them all. Happy Day.

Dominick Ruggieri

Added to our practice to be incorporated into the Group Weapons class: Elementary Broadsword Drills with Applications. We did 3 to start.

1. A simple vertical circle around the wrist.
2. Block with the Sword, Hold and Cut the waist.
3. Block with the Sword behind the back and cut the Waist.

We will get to about 6 exercises and application drills for each weapon.

Dominick Ruggieri

Broadsword Drills 4 & 5 added:

4. Is a Overhead Diagonal Slash.
5. Combines 2 & 3 into one drill

For now we will leave Broadsword at 5 Drill & 5 Application Drills...

Carla Navallo

Really like the stance routine we started. Not sure if I'm doing one of the hand movements correctly. Need to ask about it at the next class.

Dominick Ruggieri

For May of 2014 our focus will be on:

Tan Toi # 5...
Tai Chi Double Edge Sword
Hsing Yi 12 Animal Forms

5/23/14: Borrowing an idea from Linda - posting practice sessions as an "encouragement" to practice more faithfully outside of the school. Ninety minutes of practice at the Fitness Center this morning: Tai Chi (short form, long form, fan and double edge); Shaolin (20 methods, lian bu,, gung li and springing leg 1-5); dragon/phoenix (badly), Bear, stance exercise.

Carla Navallo

5/24/14 - One hour this afternoon. Palm changes with butterfly knives, continuous form, pole movements. Quan. The first 7 of the 12 animals.

Carla Navallo

5/25/14 - 80 minutes this morning at the Fitness Center. Tai Chi short form and mirror. Long Form. Springing Leg #5, Shaolin broadsword. Bear (30). Stretching routine.

Linda Ricciardi

Very happy to finally be able to inspire you for a change!

Carla Navallo

5/26/14 - 90 minutes plus this morning. 30 minutes stretching; 1 hour on the first 3 lines of Dwen Da with the video; 30 Bear stances.

Dominick Ruggieri

Carla Navallo

Not as productive a day as I had hoped. 90 minute private class this morning plus 20 minutes of universal post outside on the deck.

Carla Navallo

5-28-14: Between this morning and this evening, I logged 4-1/2 hours of practice today. The goal is 6 hours (every day). Something to strive for..... Spent a whole hour struggling with the first 3 movements of the 3rd line of Dragon/Phoenix. It's hard not to get discouraged, but I will get it no matter how long it takes. The remainder of the time was spent in stretching, doing 35 Bear stances, the shaolin stance exercises, and the remaining six animals. Then an hour of Hsing Yi going through the entire system and an hour and a half of PaGua. It's been a good day!

Carla Navallo

Not as good as yesterday, but not too bad: 3 hours, 15 minutes practice. 45 minutes of Yi Gun Gin early this morning, following by 90 minute private (working on the third line of Dragon/Phoenix, the 5th line of Springing Leg, Lien Bu, Gung Li, and the first two lines of Dwen Da. Then a one hour Tai Chi class, focusing on the first part of the Long Form.

Linda Ricciardi

Wow, Carla. You're doing great.

Carla Navallo

Only three hours today. 30 minutes doing Eight Pieces of Brocade, 30 minutes on mixture of things, including line 5 of Springing Leg, the 3rd line of Dragon/Phoenix, Liam Bu twice, Quan Do and Gung Li. One hour tai chi class and one hour weapons class - working on tai chi double edge.

Carla Navallo

Red letter day!! Six hours of practice. At China Hand: 30 minutes at 6:30 this morning stretching and dragon/phoenix. 1 hour tai chi short & long form plus mirror, tai chi broadsword & double edge. 1 hour tai chi class. 1 hour shaolin class including warm-up, horse stance, stance exercise, and 20 methods. 45 minutes outside doing tai chi double edge, then 15 minutes inside doing 20 methods 2-man. Home: 1 hour - Springing Leg 1-5; dragon/phoenix line 3; Lien Bu 2x; Gung Li 2x; Dwen Da lines 1 and 2; 35 Bear stance. Finally 30minutes to do the 8 Pieces of Brocade.

Carla Navallo

Today became a day of rest. Only two hours of practice -- all Qigong: I hour meditation, 40 minutes Yi Gun Gin and 20 minutes universal post.

Linda Ricciardi

Nothing beats a red letter day! Keep it going!

Carla Navallo

Odd that my post from yesterday (6/1) did not show up. Had done two hours of Qigong: 40 minutes Yi Gun Gin, 20 minutes universal post and two 30-minute meditation sessions. Today was a similarly peaceful day: 8 pieces of brocade and two 30-minute meditation sessions. After Saturday my knee was particularly painful and swollen, so have gone easy these two days.

Carla Navallo

Quiet day today. 2-1/2 hours practice. 1-1/2 hours private class (Springing Leg #6, Dwen Da, Dragon/Phoenix, Gung Li and Lian Bu), and 1 hour meditation.

Carla Navallo

June 4, 2014 -- 1 hour (two half hour sessions) of meditation. Not much, but better than nothing.

Linda Ricciardi

06/06: Something is always better than nothing. Some days your body needs rest and you must always listen to your body. And an hour of meditation is nothing to balk at...it is amazing. I can't do 5 min of universal post alone. You're awesome.

Carla Navallo

June 6, 2014 -- Since I've spent so much time getting ready for Come to the Table tomorrow, once again, two half hour meditation sessions is all I can manage today. Will be glad to get back to normal routine.

Linda Ricciardi

You will come back stronger than ever, rearing to go full steam ahead.

Carla Navallo

June 10, 2014: Only one hour today at China Hand - working on Shaolin forms, including Springing Leg #6. Yesterday was truly a rest day; did nothing but read. The only positive is that my knee has appreciated the time off. Trouble is, that makes it harder to get going again.

Linda Ricciardi

Thanks for your encouragement, Carla. Hopefully we will both get in a good day today at the Blueberry Farm. I'm really looking forward to it. See you later!

Linda Ricciardi

Thanks for your encouragement, Carla. Hopefully we will both get in a good day today at the Blueberry Farm. I'm really looking forward to it. See you later!

Carla Navallo

Reasonably good day today. 20 minutes of stretching early this morning. One hour weapons and Shaolin. Plus a combined 3 hours this evening doing 20 Methods, Hsing Yi and PaGua. Total of 4 hours, 20 minutes.

Carla Navallo

Great Day - 6 hours of practice. Started with 1/2 hour of Universal Post early this morning, and 1 hour tai chi. 1-1/2 hours Shaolin/Weapons, including Quan Do 1X, Dragon/Phoenix 1X, Springing Leg #6, 8X and 20 Methods too many times to count; 1 hour Pa Gua (palm changes 2X, Continuous form 2X, Pole movements 2X); 1 hour Hsing Yi (5 elements 1X, 5 elements continuous form 3X, Ba Sil 3X, Jou Sil 4X, and the 12 animals, including 40 bear stances); 1 hour Qigong.

Carla Navallo

Only two hours today: 1 hour Tai Chi and 1 hour Tai Chi double edge. And tomorrow is another day.....

Linda Ricciardi

Wow, Carla. You've been getting the practice I've been missing. Great job. Back on track for me starting tomorrow.

Carla Navallo

Another six hour practice day today. That makes two for this week. Five hours at China Hand, which included tai chi, tai chi broadsword, tai chi double edge, Shaolin (springing leg, horse stance). One hour meditation (at home). My thanks to Peter, Linda and Stephanie.

Linda Ricciardi

That is fantastic, Carla. Thanks to all of you (Carla, Peter, Steph) from me, too, for always helping me. Been neglecting my Shaolin practice this past week, so have to get back to that tomorrow. Isn't it great that there's always tomorrow! These last few weeks have been the greatest practice weather. Love early summer!

Carla Navallo

Yesterday, Sunday June 15th, turned out to be a day of rest. No practice -- not even meditation. But today is Monday - a new day, and in the words of St. Benedict: "Always we begin again."

Carla Navallo

June 15, 2014 - Today became a meditation day. 20 minutes in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. Blessings for us all.

Carla Navallo

Almost 3 hour's practice today. Private class (1.5 hr), 30 minutes. 8 Pieces of Brocade, and 50 minutes Universal Post (20 minutes this morning and 30 minutes this evening).

Dominick Ruggieri

This is awesome Carla!

Your are an inspiration to all with all of your practice and dedication.

Keep up the good work.

Shifu

Carla Navallo

Thank you Shifu. I appreciate the encouragement more than I have words to say. And today was a 6-hour day: Universal Post 30 minutes, Tai Chi SF 15 minutes, Springing Leg 1-6 60 minutes, Lian Bu 15 minutes, Gung Li 15 minutes, Stretching 45 minutes, Hsing Yi 90 minutes, and Pa Gua 90 minutes. And tomorrow will be a new day....

Carla Navallo

Not as good a day as I'd planned practice-wise, but not too bad: 30 minutes Universal Post; 1 hour each tai chi, shaolin and Qigong - 3-1/2 hours. But luncheon and my new t-shirt were just awesome. No one could ask for better or more supportive friends and fellow students. It has been an incredible day!

Carla Navallo

Forgot something yesterday: 13 of what I am going to call "tiger squats" -- the last three being difficult and the last 2 had to use the deck railing to pull myself up. So help me, I am going to get strong enough to do the low tigers the way they should be done. The squats are to be done every other day.

Carla Navallo

Three hours of practice today. 30 minutes Universal Post, 30 minutes Tai Chi Double Edge, 1 hour tai chi class, 1 hour weapons class.

Carla Navallo

Six hours practice today. 1/2 hour weapons & thirteen tiger squats; 3 hours tai chi, tai chi weapons and Shaolin; 1-1/2 hours Ba Duan Gin sitting; 1 hour meditation.

Linda Ricciardi

Wow, Carla. I love it. I think I may have to add "tiger squats" at least every other day, too. Good idea! One day I will get the discipline to practice universal post, definitely not there yet.

Carla Navallo

Three hours practice. Mostly a meditative day. Universal Post 30 minutes; Circle walking meditation 45 minutes; Pole movements 30 minutes; Ban Duan Gin standing - 30 minutes Quiet meditation 45 minutes.

Carla Navallo

June 23, 2014 - Another meditative day, although I did do 13 tiger squats (the last having to pull myself up). Did the "full treatment" of Ba Duan Gin sitting. It took 2.5 hours. Also 1 hour of quiet meditation. Total time today: 3.5 hours.

Carla Navallo

May 24, 2014 - Only 1-1/2 hours today, and that in my private lesson.

Carla Navallo

June 25, 2014 - Red Letter Day: 6 hours practice. 1/2 hour Universal Post, 1-1/2 hours Private; 1-1/2 housr Hsing Yi; 1-1/2 hours Pa Gua; 1 hour quiet meditation. (and yesterday was June 24th, not May 24th).

Carla Navallo

June 26, 2014 - A second Red Letter Day -- 6 hours practice, although most of it in classes: 1/2 hour Universal Post, 1-1/2 hours Private; 1 hour tai chi class; 1 hour doing springing leg in Shaolin class; 1 hour Qi Gong class. Finally, 1 hour quiet meditation.

Linda Ricciardi

Fantastic- two 6-hour days in a row. Here's to achieving goals!

Carla Navallo

Not even close to 6 hours today. 32 minutes Universal Post and 15 "tiger squats" -- needing help on the last two. Did lines 1 and 2 (and the reverse) of 20 Methods individual stance drills. Mind blanked on 3 and 4. Gonna ask Shifu to video these on my phone so I have something to help remind me.

Carla Navallo

Saturday, June 28, 2014 - Third red letter day this week. 6 hours practice. 4-1/2 hours at China Hand this morning; 1/2 hour standing meditation; 1 hour quiet meditation (in two half hour segments). Tomorrow will likely be devoted to Qi Gong.

Carla Navallo

Well............ so much for the best laid plans. Sunday (6/29) was a great day, but a total loss as far as practice went. Today is Monday and the start of a new week...........

Linda Ricciardi

Still, Carla, 3 red letter days in 1 week is totally awesome!

Carla Navallo

June 30, 2014 -- Day started off just fine....32 minutes Universal Post. Then I picked up a book and that was the end of it all. Never even got out of my pj's. Thank goodness for private class on Tuesday morning.

Linda Ricciardi

Must be a good book, LOL

Carla Navallo

July 2, 2014 - Much better day, in fact a red letter one. Six hours of practice. 1 hour Shaolin, 1-1/2 hours each of Private class, Hsing Yi and Pa Gua classes. 1/2 hour of quiet meditation rounded out the day.

Linda Ricciardi

Beautiful. Sometimes a day off is needed to come back stronger. See you later!

Carla Navallo

July 3, 2014 - Two red letter days in a row: 1-1/2 hours Private class; 1 hour Tai Chi class; 1 hour Shaolin class; 1 hour Qigong; 1-1/2 hours Ba Duan Gin seated (abbreviated). All that equals a 6 hour day.

Linda Ricciardi

Awesome, Carla. Heading to Steph's to practice with her in the garage on this rainy 4th. Have a great day and practice!

Carla Navallo

3 hours practice today: 32 minutes Universal Post; 1-1/2 hours general practice (stance exercise, Lian Bu, Dwen Da, 20 Methods drills, Tai Chi double edge and Tai Chi Broadsword). The remainder consisted of tiger squats and quiet meditation.

Linda Ricciardi

Oops (forgot no oops in KF), been forgetting my tiger squats. You go, Carla.

Carla Navallo

Red Letter Day - 5 hours at China Hand, plus 1/2 hour Ba Duan Gin standing and 1/2 hour quiet meditation. Six hours total. Yippee!

Carla Navallo

July 7, 2014 - No practice yesterday (Sunday). Today (Monday) was a meditation day: 32 minutes Universal Post and 2 hours quiet meditation (1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening).

Linda Ricciardi

You are doing so great with the meditation. That is really awesome.

Carla Navallo

Red Letter day - 6 hours. 1 hour quiet meditation; 1.5 hours each Hsing Yi and Pa Gua; 1.5 hour Private class and 1/2 hour working on the 3rd line of Dwen Da.

Carla Navallo

Not a red letter day, but not bad. Five hours' practice: 1-1/2 hours Private, 1 hour Tai Chi, 1 hour Shaolin, 1 hour Qi Gong, 1/2 hour quiet meditation.

Linda Ricciardi

Not bad at all, pretty good I would say. Enjoy your vaca!

Carla Navallo

July 11, 2014 - Only 30 minutes practice, mostly the 20 Methods drills. But better than no practice at all.

Carla Navallo

Saturday and Sunday were a complete wash-out since the entire day and into the evening was spent in a car. This morning, however, I did do stretching exercises. We'll see what the rest of the day brings. Thinking about everyone at the school. Miss you all. Blessings.

Linda Ricciardi

I didn't get to practice at all on Saturday either. Enjoy your vacation with your family. Miss you, too.

Carla Navallo

Here it is Thursday already. We've had a great time despite the fact it rained all day yesterday (we went to the movies). Today we're going to Disney. And, sadly, the only practice I've had so far is one hour of quiet meditation this morning. Nevertheless it has been fun. It will be over far too quickly. Blessings all.

Linda Ricciardi

Just have a good time while you are there, and then major serious practice (as you always do) when you get back here. Vacation is good for the body as well as the soul. Enjoy!

Carla Navallo

It is indeed, my friend. Blessings.

Carla Navallo

1-1/2 hour Private class this morning.

Linda Ricciardi

Great. You're getting back on track. Gotta take it slow. Maybe some meditation later.

Carla Navallo

There's only today and tomorrow; then it's off to Georgia. Today's practice totaled 4-1/2 hours so far (1-1/2 hour Private, 3 hours between Hsing Yi and Pa Gua) Will do another hour of quiet meditation, so I think I can safely say 5-1/2 hours for today.

Carla Navallo

1-1/2 hour Private, 1 hour Tai Chi, 1 hour Shaolin and 1 hour Qi Gong. That's 4-1/2 hours so far today. Add an hour of quiet meditation and that makes 5-1/2 hours for today.

Linda Ricciardi

No posts for over a week.. remember if it's not documented, it didn't happen. Time to get back to serious training again, me too!

Carla Navallo

Sadly, it didn't happen. And it's so hard to get started again.......

Dominick Ruggieri

You have 1 more week of vacation yet, so, go with the flow. Then, after that week, fun time is over. In the meantime, HAVE FUN - REST & RELAX!

Shifu

Linda Ricciardi

I was going to tell you to just start, even if it's only for 10 min, but you have to listen to Shifu, so, have fun, rest and relax, then back to serious biz.

Carla Navallo

Well, I did start the squat challenge. Should be able to continue with that in Ocean Grove.

Carla Navallo

1-1/2 hour Private class: 30 minutes catching up on all the news and 1 hour of actual kung fu. Although not all at once, I did complete the 50 squats today.

Linda Ricciardi

All good. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Carla Navallo

August 6, 2014: 2-1/2 hours kung fu (Hsing Yi and Pa Gua classes). Also 75 squats completed by day's end.

Carla Navallo

Private this morning, then tai chi class. Shaolin and Qi Gong this evening. Nearly 4-1/2 hours today. Also 60 squats by day's end. Legs are talking to me tonight.

Carla Navallo

Only 2 hours today: 1 hour each Tai Chi and Weapons. Today is a rest day for squats.

Linda Ricciardi

Hey, Carla. Time for us to both get back on track and blog our practice so we make sure it gets done. Vacation time is over. Serious training begins!
