Tai Chi Chuan: A Perspective by Shifu Mark GatesChapter 1 - Part 2 Tao The Tao is not conceivable by man. This being said, it is something of a Paradox to discuss it. Man can, however, discern some of its power and identify some of its manifestations. The diagram which follows this discussion is my poor attempt to map my understanding of what I believe. First and foremost, nothing comes FROM the Tao. By this I mean that, everything that occurs is influenced by the Tao. Those things which are knowable and conceivable are not separate from the Tao, they are simply a different aspect of it. In the same way those things are also part of the Tao. Lao T'zu said that if you can give the Tao a name, then it is not the Tao. Tao simply means the "Way". A nice ambiguous term that refers to nothing specific, without any point of reference, other than other ambiguous terms.
