World Tai Chi & Qigong Day April 2002This year China Hand Kung Fu Academy had its' first event as part of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. It was a great day as the temperature soared to a steaming 34° with a stiff wind blowing. But this didn't hinder some 50 odd people from attending this great event. Along with our participants, we were also lucky enough to have Monmouth Cable Vision come down to interview and film this Tai Chi Event and feature us on their local cable show. A Word From Bill DouglasDear World T'ai Chi & Qigong Day Supporters, below are the first reports from WTCQD events worldwide. The concurrent theme of these first reports is "bigger" "better" and "covered better by the media." Don't feel bad if your local event wasn't bigger, or well covered this year. The beauty of this event is that we ALL win when any of us wins. This global swell of awareness builds for all of us in Kansas City when Croatia or Connecticut are successful. Health and healing know no boundaries. ABC News reported "T'ai Chi is taking America by storm." But those of you worldwide know that indeed T'AI CHI AND QIGONG ARE TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM. It is a quiet subtle storm of health and healing. But, many such as in Croatia and Belgium have gotten NATIONAL media attention this year. THIS IS HUGE. All T'ai Chi & Qigong practitioners, teachers, and all of world society benefits from these successes. Revel in what we have all done together, enjoy the global successes and your local celebrations, no matter what size they were. We are all part of a very special global community of healers and visionaries . . . I am so proud to be associated with each and every person in this profoundly unique global movement of health and healing we have all create with our collective vision and hope. A simple thing . . . but of course the most profound things in life . . . are always simple . . . once we slow down and realize it. Below are the first reports, we'll send out more as they come in. Bill Douglas, Founder of World T'ai Chi & Qigong Day ************************************ NEW ZEALAND, AUCKLAND Auckland kicked off World T'ai Chi & Qigong Day 2002 with their very first event . . . 180 people showed up in the pouring rain, and had to celebrate indoors in a gymnasium. They sent beautiful photos which we hope to have a place to post them on the website soon (we'll keep you informed). To Bill Douglas: Hello Bill and everybody, it was wet and miserable in Auckland but we went ahead at 10am with about 180 participants in the gymn of a local school. There was a great feeling of harmony and everybody enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Regards, Malisa and Bernard ************************************ BELGIUM Dear T'ai Chi Friends, Today, Saturday April 6, was a wonderful sunny day in Leuven, BELGIUM. At 10am 120 students of the Golden Flower T'ai Chi® School were present to celebrate the WORLD T'AI CHI AND QIGONG DAY in the big Sportshall of the Catholic University of Leuven. More than a hundred spectators with a great interest for T'ai Chi were overlooking T'ai Chi players from the balcony. We, 10 instructors and 120 students, performed Warming Up exercises, Breathing exercises, Chi Kung and the Golden Flower T'ai Chi® Form. The atmosphere of peace and high vibrating energy was so special that some people were moved to tears and the children who accompanied their parents became so silent, almost hypnotised by the wonderful spectacle. The energy reached up to a very high peak. At 11.30 the instructors gave a free class "TAO RELAX®, a preparation to T'ai Chi" to a group of 180 people. More than 20 children participated in it. As the founder of the Golden Flower T'ai Chi® School in Belgium, I am sure that this event will be a real breaktrough for T'ai Chi in our country. Although our school participated each year to the WTCDay, it is the first time that our national TV who filmed the whole event showed any interest in T'ai Chi. We are ready for the next year and now that we opened the "public door" on the national TV, we go for more, especially for the official recognition of the WTCD in Belgium. So this is what I could not wait to share. I also want to thank the whole crew and specially you for "inventing" and organising the WTCD. The National Television System of Croatia gave the World T'ai Chi & Qigong Day event in Croatia "4 MINUTES OF AIRTIME." [Congratulations to Croatia !!! Great work. from Bill at WTCQD] ************************************ USA, IOWA Hi Bill, The World Tai Chi Day event in Waterloo, Iowa has been a huge success today! This was the first time in this community. There were about 600 people participated, and the number was doubled of what we had estamited. Everyone enjoyed the program. We did it once again! Worldwide Tai Chi Day is a soul holiday for the people. As usually we have spend a whole day in the Tai Chi practices, lessons have begun at 10 o'clock in the morning and lasted till 9 o'clock in the evening. There was a very good sunny day, though the weather looks more like the winter, not like a springtime. Temperature was below zero and a lot of snow around. But we have our morning lesson in the town park! Perhaps we are the only people, who have practice Tai Chi on the snow at this day. The bright sun, clean air, white snow and joyful people! It was great the see the enthusiasm of the participants. In addition, it appears we are going to be on television too, as a local cable channel picked up our press release and sent a film crew and reporter down. They interviewed students, first time Tai Chi players, and myself. All of this was done in the sunny 40° day with light snow flurries from time to time. Shi Wan Poi!! I wanted to let you know that the Columbus, Georgia Mayor and City Council read a proclamation at this evening's Council meeting. They also gave me a couple of minutes to share about the health benefits. Mayor Bobby Peters proclaimed Saturday, April 6, 2002 as "T'ai Chi and QiGong Day" in Columbus, Georgia. The Mayor's office is sending news releases about the event tomorrow to television, radio and newspapers. The mayor and his staff reserved a main area of a public park for us. It's surrounded by baseball fields and walking trails, so we should have lots of people watching Saturday morning. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer will run an article in this Friday's "To Do" section about Saturday's event. They visited one of our classes tonight to take pictures. They'll have an indepth article about T'ai Chi in next Tuesday's Health section of the paper. WTVM-TV (ABC affiliate in Columbus) also visited our class tonight to get video and interviews for a story tomorrow evening to publicize Saturday's event. In Naples, Florida we had two events (one indoors and one out). The outdoor event drew about 60 people (I'm unsure how the indoor event went). I tried this last year and had one person call.
